Help Restore Stars & Stripes
Our mission is to restore America’s Most Famous Yacht, Stars & Stripes, to its original beauty. Once restored, Stars & Stripes can begin retelling her story and inspiring future generations. The three-stage project pays homage to the sailing community, new and old, and will ultimately result in a floating “academy” that will retell America’s greatest moment in sailing and inspire younger generations of sailors through this America’s sailing quintessential expression. The project is being coordinated through the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit with 501(c)(3) status. The initial three Founding Sponsors are Gowrie Group, Mount Gay Rum, and American Sailing Foundation. For more information and to donate: https://americasmostfamousyacht.com
Stars & Stripes is an iconic boat and its great to see that the boat will be brought back to the USA and be restored back to its glory day condition. I remember being in Newport, RI. the day Dennis and the Team on Liberty lost the Americas Cup for the first time in what was it 132 years to Australia II. It was a pretty sad day, but one hell of a party in Newport that night. I also remember being on site when they hauled Australia II for the first time in public, revealing the winged keel for the first time, that was pretty cool.
I also saw first hand how dejected Dennis and the Team was and how he/they were going to be dragged through the mud for loosing the Americas Cup. But in typical Dennis fashion, he stepped up to the plate as any elite sportsman would do and said he would go to Australia and bring the Cup back home, and in typical Dennis Conner fashion - that's exactly what he did.
It's so exciting to see the project being coordinated through the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation.
The Foundation is a non-profit with 501(c)(3) status.
The initial three Founding Sponsors are Gowrie Group, Mount Gay Rum, and American Sailing Foundation.
This is what each of the original three Founding Partners has to say about the Stars & Stripes project:
Carter Gowrie, Managing Director & Founder of Gowrie Group, shared, “Over our nearly 50-year history, Gowrie Group has had the privilege of providing risk management and insurance solutions for the New York Yacht Club America’s Cup syndicate multiple times, including the Stars & Stripes team that won the Cup in 1987! As the insurer of the majority of yacht clubs in the US, we feel a deep connection to our nation’s sailing history, sailing organizations, and are honoured to support this important restoration and outreach initiative as a Founding Corporate Sponsor.”
“Mount Gay has a rich heritage in sailing and a storied past with America’s Cup,” noted Raphael Grisoni, Managing Director, Mount Gay. “With over four decades of commitment to the growth of the sailing community, it was a given Mount Gay would support the restoration of Stars & Stripes, and the transmission to new generations of the values of sailing: determination, collective achievement, respect, camaraderie. We can’t wait to set foot on board when restoration is complete.”
“We’re honoured by the amount of support already seen throughout the sailing community,” said Michael Fortenbaugh, Commodore, Manhattan Yacht Club. “Now is the time, a momentous occasion, for our community to get involved. I invite everyone who has been inspired by America’s Cup to pledge their donation to the future of Stars & Stripes.” Stars & Stripes will be carefully restored to its original beauty under the coordination and governance of New York Harbor Sailing Foundation, a 501(c)3 charity.
